TU plans fundraiser

Thomas University invites everyone to be a part of the Gatsby Casino Night, a scholarship fundraising event for Grady County students, on Aug. 16 at the Grady Cultural Center.

The event will feature entertainment, casino games, food and refreshments plus chances to win great prizes from local businesses.

Tickets are $25 each and include $200 in play money, live jazz music, gaming tables, an unlimited gourmet buffet, games and more.

WHS alumni to hold reunion

Organizers are putting the final touches on plans for the Washington School Alumni Reunion which will be held Friday through Sunday.  The event will kick off with a meet and greet  at 7 p.m., Friday at the Grady Cultural Center.  On Saturday, there will be a parade from the Roddenbery Memorial Library to Holder Park which will start at 11 a.m. followed by activities and snacks at the park.  There will be a banquet that evening at 7 at the Grady Cultural Center.  On Sunday, there will be a church service at 11a.m. at the cultural center followed by lunch.

All former students, teachers, faculty, staff and family of the Washington School are invited to attend.

Reception to honor Harrell

Midway Baptist Church invites everyone to join them in honoring Brother Carl Harrell in a special reception to commemorate 40 years of service in the ministry.

The reception is 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, in the Fellowship of the Midway Baptist Church.  Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

Coed kickball league forming

If you are interested in being part of a local coed kickball team call Jessica at 421-1356. The team will enjoy the fun and competition of competing against other kickball teams in the area.  

Seniors can audit TU classes

Thomas University officials have announced that anyone who is 65 or older can further their learning by auditing any class at TU for free.

Auditing a class allows a person to take the class without receiving credit for that course.

There is no charge to audit the class but there will be a $75 technology fee which provide access to the TU library computer labs and online learning resources.

Some of the classes available for audit include Studio Art, Digital Photography, Spanish 101, Overview of American Politics, Shakespeare and more.

program starts

The Grady County Schools After School Program will begin for the 2014-2015 school year on Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.

The program offers both part time (three days) and full time (five days) during the school year and will feature quality care, snacks, homework assistance, seasonal arts and crags and courtesy transportation from Southside and Shiver Schools to Eastside.

The Beautiful Light M.B. Church will be having its annual revival meeting at 7:30 p.m., through Wednesday.

The Grady County Recreation Department is currently conduction registration for its 2014 fall sports.

Parents can register their children now for Smurf Flag Football, Pee Wee Tackle Football, Mite Football, Midget Tackle Football and Cheering through Aug. 15.

Registration will also be held through Aug. 22 for soccer.  For more information such as the age control date and fees for each sport, call the Recreation Department at 377-8221 or stop by the Rec Office on the Pelham Highway, Monday through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Boys & Girls Club to hold 5K

The Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club will be having a 5K Run/Walk on Aug. 16 in honor of Marshell Wilcox, a teacher in Grady County and staff member of the Boys and Girls Club who passed away in August 2013.

The event begins at 7:30 a.m. at the club located on 6th Street, SW in Cairo.

Awards will be given to the first male and first female to complete the race along with the top three runners for each age group.

For Boys and Girls Club members, the registration fee is $5 and for non-members, the fee is $10 or $15 with a T-shirt.  After Friday, the cost will be $20 and may or may not include a t-shirt depending on availability.

All proceeds from the 5K Run/Walk will go the annual fundraising goal.  Registration forms are available at the Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club, Fitness Life, Cairo Fitness Center, Hot Spot Tanning and Fitness and Crossfit Cairo.

Season football tickets on sale

Season tickets for the 2014 Syrupmaker Football season are currently on sale for the people who purchased season tickets in 2013.

f you wish to keep your seats from last season,  the tickets through Aug. 22.

After this date, any unsold reserved seats will go on sale to the general public.  CHS football tickets will remain the same price for the 2014:  $75 for the five home games in the upper deck and $50 for the five games in the lower deck.

The tickets are available for purchase in the Cairo High front office Monday through Friday.
