As the 2019-20 school year rolls around, Harper Elementary is launching a school-wide reading initiative titled Drop Everything and Read. The program ( D.E.A.R) is based on the theory that the more students are engaged in teacher or adult-led reading intervention, the more successful they will be.

Harper is looking for community volunteers to take part in the D.E.A.R. Reading Initiative. Volunteers will be asked to participate in a professional learning training session led by Southwest Georgia RESA consultant Margie Jordan and Harper instructional coaches Keyante Braswell and Courtney Warner.

“The opportunity for community and parent volunteers to be a part of developing readers is a win-win,” Braswell said. “Students will enjoy and benefit from the relationships and interaction with volunteers and parents.”

The training includes a schedule for volunteering and training on the curriculum used for D.E.A.R. Trainings will be held August 22 from 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. or August 26 from 4-5 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. There will also be a follow-up training in January 2020. The D.E.A.R. Initiative will begin in September 2019.
