Thomas County commissioners met in a called session Friday afternoon to consider a moratorium on Internet cafés.
Commissioners voted 6-1 to implement a moratorium until Feb. 5 on granting business licenses for Internet sweepstakes businesses where gambling takes place. The motion also calls for creation of a permitted use in county ordinances or Internet sweepstakes businesses.
Commissioners said they want to define Internet sweepstakes guidelines related to parking, square footage and the number of restrooms at such businesses, among other areas of concern.
The board will schedule two public hearings on resulting changes to planning and land-use standards before voting on the proposed new laws.
Also in the called Friday session, commissioners rescinded a business license application for an Internet business at 14004 U.S. 19 South.
