THOMASVILLE — A 49-year-old woman — who has lived at a Thomasville apartment complex for three weeks — feels violated by activity police witnessed outside her home Tuesday night.

The Thomasville Police Department (TPD) bike officers were on patrol a little after 9 p.m. Tuesday when they saw a silhouette outside a window at 220 Covington Ave.

“They were squatting down looking in a window,” said Lt. Karen Murray, commander of the TPD Criminal Investigations Division. “The person became alarmed and disappeared.”

Officers circled the apartment building and returned to the window.

The individual was looking through blinds at the same apartment, but at a different window, Murray said.

Matthew Carlton, 22, of 5985 Springhill Road, was arrested and charged as a peeping Tom. He was released from the Thomas County Jail on a $2,500 bond.

Police have no previous reports about related activity at the apartment complex.

“You feel violated,” the alleged victim told the Times-Enterprise Thursday.

The woman, who lives alone, said her blinds were completely down, with only a tiny space between the bottom of the blinds and window sills.

“I’ve never had anything like this happen to me before,” the woman said.

She is grateful for police officers’ presence.

“They were on bicycles. I thought they did an excellent job. I was so impressed,” the woman said.

She was comforted by a female officer who entered her apartment afterward to ensure her safety.

“At the scene, he admitted he was looking in. He doesn’t know why,” Murray said.

The officer said people should be aware of their surroundings, including their homes.

Exterior lights should be turned on at night. “Lighting is the best deterrent to crime,” Murray said. “If you leave in the daytime and come home at night, leave lights on outside, as well as inside.”

Citizens should call 911 and report suspicious activities, sounds or individuals.

“Even if you think it’s not significant, it might be significant to us to help solve other crimes,” Murray explained.
