Roddenbery Library to hold Poetry Slam

Roddenbery Memorial Library and Dark Horse Java are sponsoring a Poetry Slam this Friday, Oct. 4 from 4 p.m. until. Anyone wishing to share their poetry or just enjoy the poetry is invited to come to Dark Horse Java on South Broad Street in downtown Cairo to enjoy free refreshments and the first Poetry Slam.

American Legion fundraiser is Thursday

The American Legion Post No. 122 will be holding a fundraising dinner this Thursday, Oct. 3, selling chicken dinner plates at the Cairo State Farmers’ Market from 3 to 6 p.m. The plates are a half barbecued chicken, baked beans and potato salad and are $8 each. Tickets may be purchased from any member of the American Legion.

Choir anniversaries to be celebrated Saturday

The Shiloh No. 1 M.B. Church and the Bethel M.B. Church of the Pine Park community will be celebrating the 63rd anniversary of their choirs on Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Shiloh M.B. Church. The two choirs will join together to sing praises to God on this evening and everyone in the community is invited to come and expect a blessing.

Men’s Day Sunday at Greater New Corinth

The men of Greater New Corinth Church will be having their annual Men’s Day program this Sunday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. The guest speaker is Pastor Randall Hines of Kingdom Harvest Fellowship Church in Bainbridge. Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

Bold Springs UMC homecoming is Sunday

Bold Springs United Methodist Church will have its annual homecoming service this Sunday, Oct. 6 at 10:50 a.m. Special music for the service will be provided by Keisha Parrish and a covered dish lunch will be served following the morning worship service. All current and former members, family and friends are invited to attend.

Reno Community Center holds gun raffle

The Reno Community Center officials are having a gun raffle to benefit the center. You may purchase tickets to win a Remington 870 shotgun for $5 each or 5 for $20. Wilson Chapel plans Women’s Day

The women of Wilson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church invite everyone to their annual Women’s Day program on Oct. 20 starting at 3 p.m. The guest speaker for the event will be Evangelist Maryann Mango Ray of Fort Valley. Following the morning service, dinner will be served and everyone is invited to attend.

Golf cart for Whigham School sought

Whigham School has expanded many of its programs included the school’s FFA program and athletics and there is a growing need for transportation on campus. Community members are seeking donations to help purchase a golf cart to be used by the school administration and staff to travel around campus more quickly. It you would like to make a donation, mail your check to Whigham School, 211 W. Broad St., Whigham, GA 39897 and write ‘Golf Card Fund’ on the reference line of the check. All donations are tax deductible.

Library starts CAM Club

Feeling creative? Want to learn more about Japan and its culture? Join the new CAM club at the Roddenbery Memorial Library. Make, discuss, and learn about Comics, Anime and Manga. Expand your knowledge and go beyond. The club meets Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Al-Anon meets Thursday mornings

Cairo High FBLA holding gift basket fundraiser

Members of Cairo High Future Business Leaders of America Club are having their annual basket fundraiser to raise money for student competitions in region, state and national levels throughout the coming year. The basket is filled with 15 different items that will capture the interest of both adults and students and include a variety of CHS items and treats from the CHS culinary arts department. Raffle tickets to win the basket are $5 each and available for all FBLA students.

Boys and Girls Club holds golf cart raffle

The Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club of Cairo members are selling raffle tickets to win a custom golf cart this fall. The car is currently on display in the showroom at Hobson Chevrolet in Cairo. Austin Hobson, the chairman for the JRBGC for this year, along with all members of the board will have raffle tickets available to sell for $20 each. This is a great cause and the opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind golf cart so stop by and purchase your raffle ticket today.

Cake pans available for checkout at library

Thanks to a generous donation by Cairo’s local VFW No. 8933 Jr. Vice Commander, Nova Maul, the Roddenbery Memorial Library is delighted to be able to offer cake pans for check out. Patrons can check out up to two pans for seven days with no renewals and must return the pans washed and in their hanging bags to avoid a cleaning fee.

Grady County schools seeking bus drivers

The Grady County School System is currently in search of part-time bus drivers for its transportation department. Applicants will be provided with the necessary training to obtain a CDL and must have high school diploma, love children and be available to drive mornings and afternoons. Library’s used bookstore reopen

The used bookstore at the Roddenbery Memorial Library has reopened on Mondays from 12 to 3 p.m. and every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The used bookstore is located in the Grady Room behind the library.
