CAIRO — Cairo's stay in the postseason hinges on today's game 3 of the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs.
The No. 3 seed out of Region 1 battled Perry to a split during Wednesday's doubleheader. Cairo (19-9) exploded for 11 hits, and starting pitcher Max Windham pitched seven innings, allowing just six hits and two earned runs, as the Syrupmakers scored a 7-3 victory in game one.
In the nightcap, errors and walks were Cairo's undoing. The Syrupmakers committed five errors, walked four and managed only three hits as Perry prevailed 6-5.
Perry broke out to a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Cairo responded with a bases-loaded walk to score a run. Then Conner Morrell delivered a two-run single to close the gap to 6-5. But a strikeout ended the inning. Cairo also stranded a runner in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.
In the opener, Cannon Waters had two RBIs, and Christian Maige, Ethan Godwin, JW Knight and Morrell each added RBIs for Cairo. The Syrupmakers spotted the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the fourth before scoring four in the fifth and three more in the seventh to clinch the victory.
First pitch for today's decisive game 3 will be at 3 p.m.
