THOMASVILLE — Preliminary autopsy results did not reveal the immediate cause of death of a man found dead in a U.S. 19 South motel parking lot early Tuesday morning.
"They are doing toxicology and histology to further look into the cause of death," said Jamy Steinberg, special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Thomasville regional office.
The autopsy was performed at GBI headquarters in Atlanta.
Police were notified at 3:14 a.m. Tuesday about an intoxicated man in the Thomasville Inn parking lot. Thomas County Emergency Services personnel responded and said the man was dead.
The man was identified as Robert Wheeler, 38, a Newton County resident, who was in Thomasville doing construction work.
No one has been charged in connection with the death, Steinberg said.
"We do know he was involved in an altercation with others and that it involved drugs," Steinberg said. "The case is active and ongoing, and we continue to work with Thomasville police to review witness statements and evidence obtained thus far in the investigation."
He said the GBI will consult with the district attorney's office as the case moves forward.
