THOMASVILLE — Thomasville Assistant Police Chief Eric Hampton did nothing illegal when he accepted gift cards from a local resident during a traffic stop, District Attorney Brad Shealey wrote in a letter to the head of the Thomasville regional office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The letter, dated Friday, states that GBI findings show the gift cards were neither requested nor spent. The letter was obtained through an open records request.
“Upon his receipt of these cards he should have immediately informed Chief Rich and turned them over to him. His failure to do so, under these specific facts, amounted to bad judgment but was not illegal,” the letter states.
Shealy stated he is “closing my files on this matter.”
