Staff report

CAIRO — The Cairo Police Department and the state fire marshal’s office are investigating a residence arson.

At approximately 8:48 p.m. on June 29 Officer Bruce Womble was dispatched to 531 7th Ave. SE in reference to a house fire.

Womble, in his incident report, said he spoke with a witness who said “that the renters had been moving out for the last week.”

The witness told Womble that about 30 minutes before the police arrived that he saw a blue car that belonged to the house’s renters in the yard.

The residence was not totally consumed by the blaze.

No arrests have been made.

“We are working with the fire marshal now, but we do not have anything to report yet,” said Cairo Police Chief Keith Sandefur Jr. on Thursday. “We hope to have something next week.”
