THOMASVILLE -- The deadline for Douglass Elementary supporters to present the Thomasville school board with a petition to prevent the school's closing has come and gone with no sign of the required number of signatures needed.

"We decided that we wouldn't go ahead with the petition and concentrate on enrollment instead," said Douglass Alumni Association President Doris Booker. "Since the school will remain open, we are working with the parents now. We are seeking out those who have transferred their children and are hoping to see a dramatic increase in the enrollment numbers this year."
