THOMASVILLE — Thomas County government's Ranges at Oakfield Sporting Center will initiate a limited — or soft — opening to the general public at 9 a.m. Monday.

Site testing has been underway for the past three weeks, said County Manager Mike Stephenson.

"All components and processes are functioning safely and properly," he said.

The purpose of the limited opening is to determine customer demand and identify peak periods of operation, Stephenson added. Hours of operation and the fee schedule are subject to change until a full opening in early October.

The ranges are at 245 County Farm Road, off U.S. 84 East.

Ranges operational priorities are:

• Teach gun safety on the range and at home

• Provide a welcoming environment for those not comfortable with weapons

• Offer an exciting venue for the more experienced shooter

Ranges hours are:

• Monday through Saturday — 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The last customer must be registered by 7 p.m.

• Sunday — 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The last customer must be registered by 5 p.m.

Daily non-member rates are:

• $20 per day to use range

• Rifle and pistol range use at no charge

• $8 per round for five-stand

• $6 per round for trap/skeet

Individual membership rates are:

 • $300 upfront per year or $29.95 per month with 12-month commitment

• Includes no charge to shoot pistol/rifle range

• $10 per additional guest per day

Ranges closing time is set for 30 minutes before sunset, Stephenson said.

"Though an appointment is not required, it is highly recommended," he added.
