CAIRO — Efforts to renovate the Zebulon Theater have fallen behind schedule, but the historic movie theater is still expected to reopen later this month.
The theater has been closed since Sept. 11 as crews moved inside to begin renovations. Theater executive director Robert Dykes said he was initially aiming to reopen Oct. 11, but work fell behind on the ceiling as crews juggled multiple jobs. As a result, scheduled floor cleanings had to be pushed back.
A new reopening date has been set for Friday, Oct. 25. Dykes said the theater will likely show "The Addams Family" that day.
Work on the theater's roof and ceiling has been completed, and a new coat of paint has been added. Renovations to the women's restroom and work on the floors and carpeting of the theater's auditorium and lobby remain incomplete.
"Hopefully by the end of this week we'll have 50 percent of that knocked out," Dykes said.
The new reopening date coincides with the theater's annual Jewels and Jeans auction the following day, Oct. 26.
More than 30 items will be available during the event, which is free to the public and will begin with a silent auction at 6:30. A live auction will then begin at 7:30 p.m.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Food and cocktails will be available.
In addition to the auction, raffles will be held for 3/4-carat diamond earrings and for a $250 gift card to South Georgia Outdoors.
Tickets for both raffles are $25 and may be purchased at the Zebulon or at Bishop's Jewelry.
All proceeds from the event will go toward the Zebulon's restoration fund. Dykes said he is looking to begin the next phase of renovations in about one year with a purchase of new curtains for the theater's walls.
Dykes said he also will look into restoring and reopening the theater's balcony depending on how much money is remaining in the fund.
