THOMASVILLE — Catherine Mims Smith took 55% of the ballots cast in the runoff and will succeed the retiring James Hardy as Southern Judicial Circuit Superior Court judge. 

Smith received 7,392 votes out of 13,367 cast across the five-county district. William Whitesel received 5,975 votes. 

Among Thomas County voters, Smith outpolled Whitesell by a commanding 4,181-772, allowing her to overcome Whitesell’s nearly 2,000-vote advantage in Lowndes County.

In the race for the U.S. House District 2 Republican nomination, Thomasville’s Chris West edged out Jeremy Hunt, winning by fewer than 800 votes.

West got 51.3% of the 28,461 votes cast across the district, which spans 30 counties.

West garnered 2,568 votes in Thomas County to Hunt’s 1,269. West received 1,028 votes in Grady County to Hunt’s 646.

West will face incumbent Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Albany) in November’s general election.
