THOMASVILLE — An off-deputy spotted a man wanted on several warrants, and the suspect later tried to throw methamphetamine out of a vehicle window after he was surrounded, according to authorities.
The deputy spotted Matthew Champion in a Smith Avenue business and called in his location, said Louis Schofill, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics and Vice Division commander. The deputy followed Champion until other deputies arrived.
Deputies caught up to Champion on Highway 84 and Highway 19 North. Champion was the passenger in a minivan.
“The driver did not want to pull over,” Schofill said.
Deputies boxed in the vehicle, being driven by a female, and Champion tried to rip open a bag containing methamphetamine to throw out the contents.
“But the bag didn’t rip,” Schofill said.
Deputies searched the vehicle and found several items that had been shoplifted from local businesses, Schofill said, including a large lawnmower that had been taken earlier that day.
Champion was booked into Thomas County Jail on May 31.
