THOMASVILLE — A Thomas County juvenile was taken into custody last week in connection to gang-related activity.
The Grady County Sheriff's Office said the 16-year-old black male was found in possession of a handgun. Under the state's gang statute, a predicate charge such as possession of a handgun must exist prior to an individual being charged with participation in a criminal street gang.
Authorities have withheld the suspect's name due to his age.
A joint investigation between the Grady County Sheriff's Office, Thomasville City Police and the Thomas County Sheriff's Office identified the juvenile as a person of interest, an investigator said.
The three entities executed a joint search warrant at the boy's house on the 200 block of Meridian Road in Thomasville last week where they uncovered several items found to be consistent with an ongoing investigation into local gang activity.
An investigator with the Grady County Sheriff's Office said evidence found on the boy's Facebook profile contributed to the street gang charge.
A detention hearing was held last week where the juvenile was remanded into detention until a full hearing can be held.
