THOMASVILLE — The search for a Thomasville police chief has been narrowed to three applicants from which the next chief will be chosen.

The top three are:

• Shane Harris — Thomasville Police Department (TPD) major

• John Letteney — Police chief in Apex, North Carolina

• Mark Scott — Americus police chief, former TPD officer

City Manager Alan Carson said he will choose a chief before the end of next week.

Troy Rich, former police chief, retired earlier this month.

The top candidates will be at City Hall from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday to meet the public in a setting of social-distancing. Those attending will have limited access to the candidates. Masks will be required, and temperatures will be taken.

"It will give the public an opportunity to meet the candidates," Carson said.

One candidate will be in council chambers, one in the council conference room and one in the reception area near the East Jackson Street side of the building. Only one entrance to the building will be available.

The Georgia Association of Police Chiefs conducted the search. Of the 31 who applied, the field was reduced to 12. Of the dozen, four withdrew from consideration.

Five of the remaining eight were interviewed.
