THOMASVILLE — An interim chief for the Thomasville Police Department is not being considered at this time as the search for a permanent selection continues.

City Manager Alan Carson met with the TPD command staff after the Monday retirement of Troy Rich. When the Thomasville police chief is on vacation or otherwise away from duties, the TPD command staff takes charge.

"We're operating as we usually do right now," Carson said. "As far as policing, we will operate as normal."

Assistant Police Chief Eric Hampton and Majors Shane Harris and Wade Glover will be in charge of the department until a new chief is named.

The Georgia Association of Police Chiefs is conducting the search for a new chief.

The original 31 applicants was narrowed to 12 to be tested and interviewed. Four of the dozen have dropped out of the running, Carson said.

The remaining eight have undergone written testing and were to be interviewed this week at police chiefs association headquarters in Duluth.

Carson said four police chiefs will interview the eight and narrow applicants to three or four.

The city manager will choose the new chief from the names submitted to him.

\Carson said that if the chief selection process becomes lengthy, he might name an interim chief "from outside the organization probably."
