THOMASVILLE — Women interested in learning firearm safety will have an opportunity to do so at a Saturday event.
The Thomas County Sheriff's Office is sponsoring a women's firearm safety course at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Thomasville Police Department firing range at Sunset Drive and County Farm Road.
Capt. Tim Watkins said the Thomas County Health Department requested the course for women after the sheriff's office conducted an active shooter exercise at the agency.
"We were waiting for it to cool down a little bit," said Watkins, sheriff's office chief investigator.
The course is free. Participants should bring their own handgun and about 300 rounds of ammunition "or as close to that as possible," Watkins said.
To register for the course, call 225-3315 and ask for Vicki. Participation will be limited to 30.
Those attending will be taught:
• Proper grip
• Sight alignment
• Sight picture
• Trigger manipulation
• Trigger reset
Instructors are Watkins and sheriff's officers David Godwin, Kevin Dennis, John Tucker and Tyler Lamons.
