Riding the legs of junior running back Deondre Cooksey, the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets defeated the always tough Marist War Eagles 21-17 Friday night at War Eagle Stadium.
In the first visit for Central to Marist, Cooksey gained 158 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets' veer attack.
"They designed their defense to take Adam (Choice) out of the game,"
Central head coach Bill Shaver stated. "They took away the pitch and everything he normally does. But the veer is supposed to be able to take advantage of what the defense gives you, and they weren't able to account for Cooksey. He had a heck of a football game."
Marist struck paydirt first after Central fumbled in the first quarter at its own 31. War Eagles running back Gray King went in from four yards out, and with the PAT, Marist led 7-0.
Central responded with an impressive 72-yard drive. The key play on was a 58-yard pass strike from Choice to tight end Peyton Singletary. Senior running back Damien Williams took it in from a yard out, and with Gavin Wilson's PAT the score was knotted at 7-7.
