THOMASVILLE — Embry-Riddle used an early onslaught to pound Thomas University 9-3 at Varnedoe Stadium on Friday.

The Eagles (8-1) scored four runs in the first and plated two more in the second against Night Hawk starter Will Smeltzer.

Smeltzer worked eight innings for TU (4-5), allowing eight earned runs on 13 hits. He struck out three and walked three.

The Night Hawks pushed two runs across in the bottom of the second to pull within 6-2.

Catcher Mike Griffin started the TU rally with a single and pinch runner Bret Huett came around to score on an Allen Nalls walk. Matthew Blanton, who singled, also scored in the inning.

Blanton paced the Night Hawks’ offensive attack with two hits.

TU added one final run in the seventh when Ruben Rodriguez doubled home Justin Majors.

The Night Hawks and Eagles meet again today in a noon doubleheader.

TU’s softball team also plays today at home.

The Night Hawks open their season against Faulkner University in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
