CAIRO – The Cairo Syrupmakers’ strong season on the hardwood paid off with multiple players being named to the all-region team in Region 1-4A.
Junior point guard Keshen Spence and junior forward Amari Powell were first-team selections, while senior guard Fabian Yarbrough and point guard Jy’Kortnee Brown were named honorable mention.
Spence led the region with 22.1 points per game along with 6.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Powell finished with 11.3 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game. He also drew a team-high 28 charges.
Yarbrough averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds per game, while Brown averaged 7 points and 2 rebounds.
“Especially in our region, to have two kids on the first team all-region, that’s the first time since I’ve been here. My first year we didn’t have anybody. Last year we had one first-team all-region. To have two kids this year, it speaks volumes about where our program is headed,” Cairo coach JJ Cooper said. “We’re headed in the right direction.”
Powell will participate in the 2023 Rising Stars High School All-Star game for “juniors” at 8:30 p.m. at Albany State University on Friday, March 17.
