THOMASVILLE — Brookwood’s return to spring practice means a valuable opportunity for the experienced Warriors, especially on offense.

The Warriors return eight starters on offense and defense, the most since 2016. When the team suits up, it will provide a chance for an already potent offense to gain traction ahead of the upcoming season.

“I think we can look at it a couple of different ways. These guys that have been doing it for so long, I’ve already told all of them, we can be more advanced,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “I think there’s always such a balancing act where you want to make sure you’re not doing so much that it slows people down where they’re paralyzed by all of the mental stress. But there should be a cumulative effect of doing something over and over. I think we can advance a little bit. I’m excited about getting even some younger guys reps during the spring as well.”

Brookwood returns a potent offensive attack, include rising-junior Rodge Waldrop at quarterback; rising-junior T.J. Thomas at wide receiver; and rising-senior Grant Gaston at tight end. Brookwood also returns four of its five starting offensive linemen.

“I’m hoping that we have more offensive linemen competing for those five spots than we’ve had since 2016. We’re going to have 10 guys,” Boggs said. “Looking at the skilled positions, we’re losing some good ones, but we return a bunch of record setters. We honestly have a bunch of other guys that already have meaningful reps.

“I think we’re going to be really strong at those positions.”

This is the first time the Warriors are holding spring practices since 2014.

“We’re excited to be able to do it, and we’re excited to have a lot of guys returning to go out there and get some reps. There’s so much 7-on-7 in the summer, you have to think of spring football as an opportunity to invest in your run game. You don’t get to do that quite as much in the summer,” Boggs said. “There will be more of an emphasis on the run game, both offensively and defensively.”
