The Seattle Mariners selected former Cairo High School star Emerson Hancock with the sixth pick in Wednesday night’s Major League Baseball draft.

Hancock, a University of Georgia junior, was 2-0 with a 2.75 earned run average before the season was shut down. He struck out 34 and walked just three in 24 innings over four starts.

For his career, he was 16-7 with a 3.47 ERA in 33 appearances, all starts. In 192 innings, he struck out 206 and walked 55.

Hancock was drafted out of high school in the 38th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
