THOMASVILLE — A successful region tournament run has yielded a home playoff game for the Brookwood Warriors in the GISA Class AAA state playoffs.
Following its thrilling victory over Southland in the Region 3 championship game last Friday, the Warriors will open the state tournament on Wednesday at home against Frederica Academy.
Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
“We definitely talked about how we wanted to peak at the right time as a team. I feel like we're doing that,” Brookwood coach Drew Giudice said. “We really are all on the same page right now. We talked about how it was important for us to have success. Guys are playing well together. It's showing on the court.”
Though Brookwood is 10-13, it has won four of its last five games, including two thrillers in the region tournament; a 47-46 victory over Valwood on Thursday and its 48-46 win over Southland when Dallas Forsyth drained the winning 3-pointer.
Its opponent on Wednesday, the Knights, have lost two straight, including a 64-63 decision to Pinewood Christian in their region tournament on Saturday.
Since it's a No. 8-9 matchup, it figures to be a good, even matchup. At least that's the way Giudice sees it.
“They're very well-coached, organized and disciplined; run a lot of stuff on offense that we'll have to get ready for,” Giudice said. “They have a very skilled big man (William Jobe). He can step out and shoot it. He can take it off the dribble. He's a freshman and already like 6-7.
“They surround him with a lot of shooting as well. It'll be tough defensively.”
The winner of Wednesday's game will play the winner of Creekside Christian and Tiftarea Academy on Saturday at John Milledge Academy at 7 p.m.
