A sellout crowd of 83, 231 fans congregated in Doak Campbell Stadium Saturday night to witness EJ Manuel’s career-best performance and a huge victory for Florida State.
Manuel passed for 380 yards and two touchdowns in the Seminoles’ 41-37 triumph over ACC foe Clemson. He also rushed for more than 100 yards.
The Seminoles, who gave up a quick score to trail for the first time all season, went into the half down 21-14. None of their previous 11 opponents had scored more than 19 points in a game.
“We just knew we had to keep scoring points to help our defense out,” Manuel said. “Those guys (Clemson), we knew they could score 50 points easily. As an offense, we knew we had to get out there and take iniative and score points.
“Our defense played lights out in the second half.”
After halftime, the Seminoles clamped down defensively and erased a 14- point deficit by scoring 35 points, including 28 straight.
In the passing department, Manuel finished 27-of-35 for a career-high 380 yards with two touchdown passes and zero interceptions. He connected on 77.1 percent of his passes against the Tigers and has completed 409-of-604 career attempts, a completion percentage of 67.7 percent. His Clemson tally moved him into first place all-time on the ACC career completion percentage.
