The Thomasville girls soccer season ended in unopportune fashion with Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to Putnam County.

Despite retaining possession for the bulk of the game, the Lady ‘Dogs mustered just one goal on 24 shot attempts.

“We just couldn’t get our shots down,” said sophomore midfielder Daniella Pistelli, who scored Thomasville’s lone goal in the 55th minute. “Their defense wasn’t very strong. We could’ve beat them. They just had an edge on their first touch.”

Putnam drew first blood with the game’s first goal in the 8th minute, then added another in the 22nd minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Thomasville coach Martha Murray said she made minimal halftime adjustments, but enough to where she felt confident heading into the final period.

“With the adjustments, we weren’t able to create much,” she said. “We had opportunities.”

Putnam’s Samantha Silva extended the Lady War Eagles’ lead to three with a score in the first 45 seconds of the second half.

Thomasville had five missed shots within the first ten minutes of the final period, including one off the goal edge and another just over the net.

The Lady ‘Dogs were also victim to many halted fast breaks, most notably to THS leading scorer Ciera McGriff.

“Me and Ciera were trying to make assists to each other,” Pistelli said. “Every time I got to her, she wasn’t there or when she got it to me, it wasn’t happening. We just didn’t have our communication I guess.”

Murray told the team postgame that they have much to hang their hat on after the 2014 campaign. The Lady ‘Dogs finished 10-6-1, added another 1-AA title to their trophy case – their 11th in the last 12 years – and defeated Thomas County Central for the first time in over a decade.

“I’m pleased with our season,” Murray said. “We’ll regroup and get back at it next year.”
