THOMASVILLE — Thomas University’s softball team got off to a perfect start Saturday, sweeping Faulkner University in its season opener, 8-5 and 5-2.

Stacey Ward got off to a strong start in her senior season, finishing with four hits in the twinbill, with four RBIs and a pair of homers. Her first long ball came in the first inning, a three-run bomb that helped the Night Hawks to a 6-0 lead.

Sarah Yingling added two hits and two RBIs for the Night Hawks (2-0). Joanne Tosh finished with a pair of RBIs for TU as well.

TU starting pitcher Stacie David surrendered nine hits in seven innings but fanned five batters.

The bats were the story in game one. Pitching dominated for the Night Hawks’ in the second game.

Brittani Phillips allowed one earned run and seven hits in seven innings but struck out eight batters.

TU scored two runs in the third and fifth innings to surge to the victory.

Ward’s second home run of the day came in the fourth inning.

Brittany Berthold added a hit, a run and two RBIs for the Night Hawks.

TU returns to the diamond again Saturday when it hosts Edward Waters in a twinbill.

First pitch is at 1 p.m.
